We invite you to begin your day today with the C. S. Lewis quote: “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” It feels good when you read it and then when you decide to chart your day by it, it gets even better. That leads to C.S. Lewis the man, and wondering what he must have been thinking when he wrote that quote. Or, did someone merely hear him say it and it was passed along and made its way into literary history. Whatever the case, it is a profound set of words. It indicates that the human spirit and mind are limitless. We can constantly achieve whatever we seek with no limitations because whatever we seek can be reinvisioned.
You have to wonder, did C.S. Lewis believe in this philosophy because of what happened in his life or did the events in his life happen because he believed in this philosophy? It’s the old chicken or the egg question. C.S. Lewis lived a cloistered, circumvent life in the safety of Academia most of his adult life. Unexpectedly, late in life, he found intense personal happiness with his marriage to poet and writer Joy Gresham. His decision to take a risk and welcome happiness into his life also brought great loss as well. Gresham’s battle with terminal cancer made their time together short lived. Most historians acknowledge that his relationship with her personally changed him forever and greatly influenced his literary career. Regardless of whether his quoted philosophy allowed him to explore conscious change in his life or the life transformation initiated a shift in philosophical viewpoint; a conscious decision was made to evoke change. Thoughts create emotions and cause and effect determines the equation. How and when we fashion the formula, is up to each individual . . . but it is a decision nonetheless.
The same may be said for our current economic times. Although many people are feeling the same pinch; it is our decision on how we move forward through the muck that is important. Do we align ourselves with others? Do we seek alliances to help shoulder the burdens? Are we seeking new ways of thinking? Are we open to new technologies? Do we believe there is a light at the end of the tunnel? And if we believe there is no light, are we at least thinking of solutions for how we are going to create new light? Are we using our energies in ways to find paths through this period in time or is that same energy being used to merely bemoan what has gone before?
The answers to any or all of these questions, require decisions. Decisions MUST be made, (whether you perceive them as voluntary or involuntary) in order for our thoughts to process these concepts. Regardless of what we go through, we can make the decision to change how we feel about any given situation.
Why is this so pivotal? Because people own businesses. We somehow have forgotten that emotions and reactions are part of who we are as human beings. We own businesses. We work in businesses. We rely on businesses. Somewhere along the way we made the decision that people and businesses were separate. That might have not been one of our best decisions but it was one nonetheless. We are now seeing with social media that we are remembering the connection and we are seeking to get it back.
We are remembering that the connections are an active decision to reconnect with other people. Will that increase business. We believe it will. It is our decision to formulate that idea and educate others. We invite you to do the same. Make decisions for you, your business and our lives.
